IBM System z9 Overview

The IBM System z9 was introduced as the successor to the z990, delivering higher performance, scalability, and advanced security features. It came in two families: z9 EC (Enterprise Class) for maximum performance and z9 BC (Business Class) for smaller workloads with enterprise reliability.

IBM System z9 EC (Enterprise Class)

Models:

• 2094-S08 – up to 8 cores

• 2094-S18 – up to 18 cores

• 2094-S28 – up to 28 cores

• 2094-S38 – up to 38 cores

• 2094-S54 – up to 54 cores

The z9 EC could be configured with different processor types (CPs, IFLs, zAAPs, zIIPs, ICFs) and supported large-scale enterprise workloads with high memory and throughput demands.

IBM System z9 BC (Business Class)

Machine Type: 2096

Models:

• 2096-S07 – up to 7 cores

• 2096-S17 – up to 17 cores

The z9 BC offered a lower entry point in terms of cost and capacity but retained mainframe-class features like high availability, security, and workload flexibility—ideal for midsize enterprises or as a secondary system.
