High-Performance and Highly Scalable Switching and Routing

Summit X460 offers core-class intelligent switching and routing with exceptional port density and high-performance stacking technology powered by the ExtremeXOS^® modular operating system.

High Density, Small Form Factor

Extreme Networks^® Summit X460 provides high density for Gigabit Ethernet in a very small 1RU form factor for up to 52 ports in one system and 416 ports in a stacked system using backward compatible 40 Gbps SummitStack™ or new high-speed SummitStack-V80 running at 80 Gbps and at distances up to 100m between switches. In addition, Summit X460 supports the new SummitStack-V capability to utilize 10 GbE ports as stacking ports, enabling the use of standard cabling and optics technologies. SummitStack-V provides long-distance stacking capability of up to 40 km.

Summit X460 offers optional 10 Gigabit Ethernet connectivity for six ports in one system and 32 ports in a stacked system, with the industry standard SFP+ interface. For emerging demands from data, storage, voice, and data convergence, Summit X460 provides highly scalable Layer 2/3 switching and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS)/Hierarchical Virtual Private LAN Service (H-VPLS) by supporting up to 32,000 Layer 2 MAC addresses or 12,000 IPv4 and 6,000 IPv6 Longest Prefix Match (LPM) routing tables. Summit X460 switches also support Provider Bridges (PB, IEEE 802.1ad).

High Availability and Simplicity

Summit X460 enables enterprise campus, data center, and Carrier Ethernet edge, aggregation and core backbone deployment in AC-powered and DC-powered environments. Summit X460 simplifies network operation with ExtremeXOS modular OS, available across Extreme Networks Ethernet switches. The ExtremeXOS operating system provides high availability and simplicity with one OS everywhere in the network.

AVB Support

Summit 460 supports IEEE Audio Video Bridging (AVB) standards to enable reliable real-time audio and video transmissions over Ethernet, for high-definition and time-sensitive multimedia streams with assigned Quality of Service (QoS). ExtremeXOS leverages AVB to identify and reserve network resources for A/V traffic streams and supports synchronous streaming capabilities to ensure reliable and high-quality A/V transmissions over Ethernet.

High Performance Switching and Routing

Summit X460 switches are available in six different port configuration options: 28-port Gigabit Ethernet (Summit X460-24t/24p/24x), 48-port fiber Gigabit Ethernet (Summit X460-48x), or 52-port Gigabit Ethernet (Summit X460-48t/48p). All ports run at non-blocking, wire-speed performance and can carry wire-rate traffic to the option slots, which allows flexible configuration. Option slot A supports a two-port 10 GbE Module (XGM3-2sf). For SummitStack stacking ports, a two-port SummitStack module or two-port SummitStack-V80 module can be installed in option slot B. Summit X460 switches also support SummitStack-V which offers stacking over the dual 10 GbE interfaces using less expensive cabling and providing longer stacking distances.

Flexible Port Configuration

Summit X460 offers very flexible port configurations. Summit X460-24t/24p provides 20 Gigabit Ethernet copper ports (PoE-plus or non-PoE) with four dedicated Gigabit Ethernet fiber ports and four shared Gigabit Ethernet fiber ports for up to 8 fiber Gigabit Ethernet ports. If higher density copper ports are required, the switch can provide up to 24 Gigabit Ethernet copper ports while still providing 4 Gigabit Ethernet fiber ports. Through the two option slots, Summit X460 switches can be equipped with up to an additional six 10 Gigabit Ethernet and/or SummitStack stacking ports.

Intelligent Switching and MPLS/H-VPLS Support

Summit X460 supports sophisticated and intelligent Layer 2 switching, as well as Layer 3 IPv4/IPv6 routing including policy-based switching/routing, Provider Bridges, bidirectional ingress and egress Access Control Lists, and bandwidth control both for ingress and egress. To provide scalable network architectures used mainly for Carrier Ethernet network deployment, Summit X460 supports MPLS LSP-based Layer 3 forwarding and Hierarchical VPLS (H-VPLS) for transparent LAN services. With H-VPLS, transparent Layer 3 networks can be extended throughout the Layer 3 network cloud by using a VPLS tunnel between the regional transparent LAN services typically built by Provider Bridges (IEEE 802.1ad) technology.
